Documentary Filmmaker

Full-time · Sydney, Australia · Reporting directly to Matt D'Avella

I'm looking for a Sydney-based documentary filmmaker with 5+ years experience to join my team, and help create films that reach millions of people. If you're looking for greater creative involvement, more responsibility, and the opportunity to make work that genuinely impacts others, I'd love to hear from you.

You'll work directly with me on every film we produce, helping plan productions, capture cinematic footage, and craft compelling long-form stories for YouTube. This role is ideal for someone who loves every stage of the filmmaking process. Someone who enjoys solving creative problems, has strong storytelling instincts, and cares as much about the final film as they do the individual shots.

The right person is excited by the challenge of building a sustainable documentary workflow where quality always comes before quantity.

ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

What you'll actually do

  • Collaborate with me from the earliest idea through the final cut on every film. You're involved at every stage, not just handed a brief.

  • Contribute to pre-production: research, story development, shot lists, location scouting, and planning shoots from the ground up.

  • Shoot cinematic footage for documentary projects, with a strong eye for composition, light, and moment.

  • Edit long-form films (15+ minutes) with a strong sense of pacing, structure, and emotional arc.

  • Review and give feedback on cuts, not just execute notes, but actively contribute to shaping the story in the edit.

  • Challenge ideas when something isn't working and bring your own creative solutions to the table.

  • Help develop the visual language and production systems that support a sustainable monthly documentary schedule.

What I'm looking for

  1. Technical chops. You have 5+ years of professional experience filming and editing. You're confident shooting cinematic footage and editing long-form narrative or documentary work. You can edit in your preferred application: DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, or FCPX.

  2. Creative instinct. You have strong instincts and don't need constant direction. You can take an idea, run with it, and make thoughtful creative decisions throughout the filmmaking process. You know when something is working, when it isn't, and how to improve it.

  3. Collaborative energy. Technical skill is essential, but the real test is how you work with others. This role requires trust, communication, and a shared commitment to making exceptional films.

What this role isn't

This isn't a content-factory job. I believe great art comes from people, not automation. While we'll use modern tools where they're helpful, the focus is on thoughtful storytelling, strong filmmaking, and creating work that lasts longer than a social media trend. If your primary interest is growth hacking, viral formats, or turning one film into dozens of short clips, this isn't the right fit.

Working with me

  • You'll work directly with me and have meaningful creative input on every project.

  • I have high standards, but I also believe in building a sustainable creative life.

  • The goal is to make exceptional films that reach millions of people without burning out.

  • The role is based in Sydney and follows a hybrid setup, with mostly remote work and regular in-person collaboration.

What to expect after applying

Every application will be carefully reviewed.

If you’ve made it to Round 2, you’ll be notified via email and invited to a remote interview. This is a chance to learn more about your experience, creative approach, and working style.

Round 3 is a paid project. Before making a final hire, I’ll invite a small number of finalists to work on a project together. This is the most important part of the process, because it shows what collaboration actually feels like, not just what a reel looks like on paper.

Compensation & details

Salary: $150,000 AUD per year. For the right long-term collaborator, I'm open to a profit-share arrangement tied to channel revenue.

Leave & flexibility: Five weeks annual leave, paid parental leave, and a flexible working arrangement built around doing great work sustainably.

Development: Budget for gear, courses, and materials to keep growing as a filmmaker
